How to Tell If Your MTG Deck Has Too Many Expensive Cards

Define what “on time” means for your deck

Start with the deck’s intended timeline. An aggressive Constructed deck, a controlling Draft deck, and a battlecruiser Commander list do not have the same acceptable curve. Write down four expectations before changing cards:

  • The earliest turn on which the deck should make a meaningful play.
  • What it needs to accomplish during turns one through three: pressure, interaction, selection, setup, fixing, or acceleration.
  • The turn on which its major payoff should normally become castable.
  • Whether that payoff stabilizes the game, threatens to end it, or merely generates incremental value.

This exposes mismatches between the list and its stated plan. If a deck wants to pressure opponents early but its first relevant action regularly costs four mana, the problem is not just “high average mana value.” The deck lacks functional early turns. Conversely, a control deck can deliberately spend its early turns answering threats before deploying an expensive finisher.

How to diagnose too many high-mana cards

Open the list in a deck builder or curve analyzer and sort cards into mana buckets, but do not stop at the chart. Next, look for congestion rather than one arbitrary cutoff. A deck can have a reasonable average mana value while still containing too many cards at four and five mana. If several cards compete for the same turn, some will remain in hand even when every land drop is made. Audit expensive cards by role, not just quantity

Give every expensive card a job: finisher, stabilizer, card-advantage engine, combo piece, removal, protection, or value. Then compare cards sharing the same job and casting window.

Three expensive finishers may be reasonable if they attack from different angles and the deck needs redundancy. Five cards that all generate slow value after resolving may be excessive, especially when none immediately stabilizes a losing board. The first cuts should usually be cards that are redundant, narrow, or consistently stranded—not necessarily the card with the largest number in its upper-right corner.

Ask these questions of each top-end card:

  • Does it produce an immediate effect when cast, or must it survive another turn?
  • Does it help when behind, or only make an already favorable position better?
  • Is its role already covered by a cheaper card?
  • Is it still useful when drawn before the deck can cast it?
  • Does the deck have a deliberate way to discard, cycle, pitch, or otherwise use it early?
  • Would drawing two copies create options, or simply produce a traffic jam?

Do not remove all meaningful payoffs. A deck that accelerates efficiently but has nothing worth accelerating into has solved the wrong problem. Check whether your ramp is early enough

Counting every mana rock, treasure maker, or land-search spell as “ramp” can disguise a timing problem. Acceleration supports expensive cards only if it becomes usable before the turn where the deck would otherwise stall.

A setup card that costs as much as the spells clogging your hand may not solve the bottleneck. A four-mana ramp effect followed by a six-mana spell can be appropriate in a slow environment, but it does nothing for a deck that must interact or establish a board before turn four. Likewise, a mana doubler can enable an enormous late turn without functioning as early acceleration.

For each ramp card, record when it can be cast, when the extra mana becomes usable, whether it fixes colors, and whether it depends on another permanent surviving. Inspect functional plays on turns one through three

Now ignore average mana value and count what the deck can actually do early. Separate those actions into development, interaction, selection, fixing, and conditional setup. A one-mana protection spell is cheap, but it is not a proactive turn-one play when there is nothing to protect. A situational removal spell may be castable on turn two without being useful then.

A healthy-looking curve can therefore be functionally empty. Label each cheap card according to what it accomplishes under ordinary conditions. If most early cards require a target, a specific permanent, or a favorable matchup, the deck may need more unconditional development rather than fewer finishers.

Separate curve problems from mana problems

An expensive spell is not at fault if the deck repeatedly misses its fourth land or cannot produce the required colors. Check land count, early colored sources, tapped-land timing, and concentrated colored-pip requirements separately from the curve.

For example, a five-mana spell requiring three mana of one color may be less castable than a six-mana spell with a lighter requirement. A three-color deck can also have enough total lands while lacking the correct early sources. Mana value describes quantity; colored pips describe access.

Commander decks add another variable because the commander itself may be a recurring top-end expense. Goldfish hands and label the failure

A goldfish cannot reproduce removal, counterspells, opposing pressure, or multiplayer politics, but it can reveal whether your own mana plan repeatedly fails before an opponent does anything.

For each hand, play through the early turns using ordinary decisions rather than assuming perfect draws. Record one primary failure label when the hand underperforms:

  • Too many expensive cards: multiple spells remain several turns from being cast.
  • Too little mana: the hand misses necessary land drops.
  • Wrong colors: enough mana exists, but the relevant spells remain inaccessible.
  • Late ramp: acceleration appears only after the deck has already lost time.
  • No early action: the hand has mana but cannot develop, select, or interact.
  • Conditional hand: cheap spells exist but lack valid targets or setup.
  • Redundant payoff: several cards occupy the same role and casting window.
  • No payoff: mana development succeeds, but the hand has nothing consequential to do.

Do not decide from one spectacular failure or one perfect hand. Repeat the process consistently and look for the label that recurs. The purpose is not to manufacture a win rate; it is to identify the deck’s most common internal bottleneck.

Include mulligans in the diagnosis

A hand is not good merely because it contains lands and spells. It should have a plausible sequence that supports the deck’s plan. If your keep decisions are based on seeing favorite expensive cards, the deck may appear clunkier than it is. Under the current Comprehensive Rules, a player generally draws seven cards, redraws the same starting-hand size after choosing to mulligan, and then puts cards on the bottom equal to the number of mulligans taken. Adjust the standard for Limited, Constructed, and Commander

Limited decks usually have smaller card pools and fewer opportunities to engineer cost reduction or specialized mana packages. Commander offers more time in some groups, access to a commander, and multiplayer mulligan context, but that does not make early development optional. Judge expensive cards against your actual table’s pace and the deck’s plan. Keep the expensive cards your mana plan can support

The right top-end count is the one your deck can cast on a useful timeline without sacrificing the early actions needed to reach that point. Define the plan, classify functional costs, find role congestion, audit ramp and colors, and label failures during repeated opening-hand tests.

Then cut the expensive cards that are redundant, situational, or consistently stranded—not every card above an arbitrary mana value. Your next practical step is simple: draw an opening hand, play the first several turns, and write down exactly why the hand succeeded or failed. “It felt clunky” starts the investigation.
